Trust starts before the first appointment, first project, or first purchase. It starts when people understand who is behind the work, why they care, and what kind of experience shapes the way they serve others.

A business may be known for its products, services, or results, but the owner’s story often explains the heart behind it all. It shows where the standards come from. It gives meaning to the details. It helps people feel more confident about choosing a business that is guided by real experience, steady values, and a personal commitment to doing things well.

This is a closer look at the Stephen's background, the lessons learned along the way, and the values that continue to guide the work every day.

A story shaped by hands-on experience

Early on in life, Stephen had a high passion for cars and performance. With really no family that shared the same passion other than his Uncle, it likely stemmed from playing racing video games such as Need For Speed, Grand Turismo, etc.. Then the movie series that spawned a generation of automotive enthusiasts premiered, The Fast and The Furious, while Stephen was in High School.

As silly as that may sound, It paved the path that Stephen followed from then until present day. After graduation and a short detour on career path, Stephen enrolled at Universal Technical Institute's "NTI", which is the NASCAR elective campus located in Mooresville, NC.

After completing the program at NTI, Stephen accepted a position at Lake Norman CJDR (Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram) as a Lube/C tech with some B Tech level jobs on occasion. The Dealership had a postition in the parts department become available, to which Stephen then moved for the remainder of his tenure (2 years) at Lake Norman.

Stephen and his family needed to relocate to Southern VA, which is the beginning of the story for Stephen in the Automotive Performance Industry. April of 2013, Stephen accepted a position with a company, at the time called Modern Muscle Performance, as a performance tech specializing in Mopar vehicles.

Installing Prochargers, building cylinder heads, camshafts, headers on Challengers, Chargers and Magnums galore! What started out as some jobs for the Owner of Modern Muscle's (Dave Weber) buddies grew into more. Stephen began the tuning side of things with Diablo Sport, servicing the restomod PCM products that Modern Muscle offered to cusomers hotrods. Nothing complicated, but getting used to the tools and how they worked was the stepping stone that lead into the business Stephen owns today. While Modern Muscle was growing, Stephen adovated to the owner, Dave Weber (a man with a flip phone) , with the idea of bringing the brand to social media platforms and Stephen helped grow the brand over the years that followed. Stephen began to fill in really anywhere and whatever needed to be done at Modern Muscle, from hand porting intakes to taking out the trash, posting on social media and scheduling jobs, eventually Stephen became the "GM". The only stone left unturned was the fact that Modern Muscle had to rely on one of the handful of tuners that tuned the Mopar platform via DiabloSport. Modern Muscle eventually became busy enough that they needed to seek someone to begin tuning the cars being built in house. Dave asked Stephen if it was something that he would take on, and Stephen accepted the challenge.

For about 2 years Stephen tuned the vehicles built by Modern Muscle using DiabloSport. This came with a particular set of hurdles as there were only a few people that did this professionally and the niche was pretty cutthroat. No one wanted to share information, so, it became a battle of delivering a quality product and fighting off the backlash from the "professionals" claiming that Stephen was "stealing" their files.

in 2016 HP tuners had announced they will be supporting the Mopar platform and Stephen saw that as the opportunity to jump on board early to accomplish two things: Put all the critics to rest and since HP Tuners was already dominate in the GM market, the possibility to support more than just Mopars in the future. Stephen made the switch and began tuning all the vehicles that Modern Muscle built utilizing HP tuners product and software.

2016 was also the year that Stephen met AZN of Street Outlaws while displaying a customer's Jeep at PRI show. AZN explained to Stephen that he owned a Jeep SRT as a daily driver and was interested in modifying it. After the show, Stephen called AZN and proposed the idea of installing a 405ci stroker (a common displacement that Modern Muscle offered as a boost friendly variant of the 6.1 HEMI platform) would the best idea due to the lore of the 405 area code. AZN agreed it would be a disservice not to and thus began the journey with the Jeeper Sleeper.

The story of the Jeeper Sleeper can be quite detailed, it lead to more opportunites, Stephen and crew on the Discovery Channel episodes, friendships and overall a really fun adventure!

But on the normal day to day grind, Modern Muscle was growing and eventually decided to rebrand as Modern Muscle Xtreme or MMX. It also became busy enough that Stephen had to hand off the GM resposibilties and focus primarily on tuning. This allowed for more focus on delivering quality product as well as helping other shops that were purchasing MMX products. MMX began offering Remote Tuning for specific camshafts to customers and shops which developed a new skill for Stephen. Learning to tune cars with your senses like hearing, seeing, smelling is one thing, delivering the same product without the senses is a whole other ballgame. That portfolio was able to help Stephen create new contacts in the industry such as Bob Morreale of The Tuning School.

Why is that important you ask? Well, from 2016, getting into HP Tuners, riding the Jeeper Sleeper wave and helping out others with tuning MMX products, in 2020 Stephen attended a GM LT platform class at The Tuning School to expand knowledge as well as a possible expansion of MMX. Then Shortly after that, Stephen attended a GM LS class, and then a Ford Coyote Class. While there was valuable information in each of them on their own; What really stood out to Stephen is that tuning, no matter what platform, is the same principle. If you can sort through each brands specific nuances, the process of tuning them is the same. In November of 2021, Stephen was asked to become an Instructor at The Tuning School.

In December of 2021, Stephen had decided to take a look back at what he had learned the previous 5 years and saw an opportuninty. Something that MMX had early on, that the handful of diablosport tuners did poorly. Stephen sought out to build a company and brand that focused on providing Remote Tuning to shops across the US and the world. There are plenty of shops that can turn wrenches out there, just not all have the luxury of a person with tuning capabilites and knowledge. The founding of Evolution Tuning & Performace began with the idea that Stephen would be the solution to all the shops mentioned above, once they finish the mechanical side of a job, Stephen be the one to call to finish it up and help tie it in a bow for their customer.

The founding of Evolution Tuning & Performance and becoming an instructor at The Tuning School is what Stephen poured himself into beggining Jan 2022 and this is still what Stephen is doing to this day.

The background behind the business

Mentioned in the story above, Stephen saw the opportunity to help fill the need for shops that don't have an in-house tuner, don't require one, or just the average guy installing parts on his car or truck in his garage.

This also allows for Stephen to have exposure and constantly sharpen his knowledge of new vehciles being supported, and staying up to date on new products being released. There is never a time to stop learning as these vehicle are constantly evolving. Since Stephen focus' on tuning and build design alone, this allows for expert advice and tuning across many platforms, with focus on the modern American V8s with Mopar, GM and Ford.

Experience that builds better judgment

Experience is not just about time. It is about what a person learns during that time. Stephen aims to have a takeaway from every tune to be able to better serve the next customer.

This experience also helps Stephen adapt. No two customers are exactly alike. No two projects are always the same. A strong background gives Stephen the ability to respond thoughtfully instead of treating every situation with a one-size-fits-all approach.

It allows for better judgment on build design as well. When we build cars better, we are able to deliver the customer or end user with a higher quality product., not just some thrown together build based on random products recomended by the internet. These ideas are not random. They come from years of doing the work, hearing customer concerns, and learning how to create a better experience from start to finish.

The values that guide the work

Skills matter, but values decide how those skills are used.

For Stephen, the business is personal. It represents years of learning, risk, sacrifice, and pride in doing good work. That personal connection often creates a higher level of care because he is thinking about reputation, relationships, and long-term trust.

These values can sound simple, but they make a real difference.

Why the owner’s story matters

People often want to know more than what a business offers. They want to understand who is behind it.

The owner’s story matters because it explains:

  • Why the business exists

  • What standards guide the work

  • How experience shapes customer service

  • What the owner values most

  • What people can expect when they reach out

This kind of connection is especially important when a customer is choosing between several options. A polished list of services may explain what a business does.

Knowing Stephen's story also creates a sense of accountability. When the owner is visible, it's more personal. You as the customer know there is a real person standing behind the work, not just a name on a sign or a website.

That personal connection can turn a simple first interaction into the beginning of a long-term relationship.

What customers can expect

Getting to know the owner also helps set expectations.

When a business is shaped by experience, care, and accountability, customers can expect a process that feels more personal and grounded. You can expect someone to take the work seriously. You can expect communication that is direct and respectful. You can expect decisions guided by both skill and integrity.

That does not mean every project is simple or every answer is instant. It means Stephen will approach each situation with responsibility and care.

You are not just buying a service or product. You are placing trust in the person behind it.

That trust deserves attention.

A continuing story

The story is never finished. Each customer, project, challenge, and milestone adds another chapter.
